I lived all four years in Anna Mann in the corner suite with the fireplace and window seats. One Sunday -- probably in 1956 or 1957 -- my husband-to-be Guy [J. Sircello, 1958] and I decided we wanted to build a fire in the fireplace. I believe we had some idea of roasting marshmallows. Neither of us had ever had a fireplace or built a fire before, so we just wadded up the entire Sunday paper, put it into the fireplace, and lit it. The paper flamed up immediately, and we were waiting for it to die down to something manageable when we heard sirens. We looked out the window and saw firetrucks coming down the street in front of the Old Dorm Block. It seems that no one had built a fire in that fireplace for years and we had set some old birds' nests on fire. Flames were shooting out the top of the chimney. We were strongly counseled by the Fire Department to learn more about building fires and checking chimneys before we tried it again. Of course, that was our last fire.
