Orientation 2017

Orientation Odysseys: Peer Mentor Program

The Peer Mentor Program (PMP) supports the experiences of students from underrepresented communities and provides yearlong opportunities to engage in conversations about the effect of diverse perspectives on the educational experience at Reed College.

Peer Mentors

Students who are the first in their families to attend college, students of color, and students from low income backgrounds are particularly encouraged to join PMP, however all students who identify with the mission of PMP are welcome to join. The four-day Odyssey offered prior to New Reedie Orientation is the first of many PMP activities that take place throughout the year.

In addition to the Odyssey, an important compontent of the program is peer mentoring. By pairing incoming students with current Reedies, PMP provides additional support for new Reedies transitioning to college life. Participants benefit from meaningful and supportive peer relationships; enhanced knowledge of academic, health, and social campus resources and networks; and opportunities for involvement and leadership.

During the Odyssey, you will explore the city of Portland, engage with the needs of our local community, and learn about campus resources that will support you in your transition to Reed. This Odyssey is for you to get to know other new students, meet potential mentors, and have fun!

If you register for the Peer Mentor Program Odyssey, you cannot attend another Odyssey.

Please dress comfortably. Clothing and shoes that are comfortable for walking on Saturday and Sunday are strongly recommended. Weather in the Pacific Northwest is highly variable. Although August tends to be quite warm and sunny, it can be cool at night and rainy. We suggest that you dress in layers to be prepared for temperature changes.
